What You Have In Your Pocket That Could Get You Arrested
There are so many laws in the United States now, that it’s been said that everyone is a law breaker, they just may not know it yet. Unfortunately, there is some truth to this. The sheer number of Federal laws in the U.S., combined with state and municipal laws, is mind-boggling.
But what makes it worse is that, frankly, you can be busted for breaking a law that you didn’t know existed all thanks to something that you probably have in your pocket or purse right now: your mobile phone.
The fact of the matter is that, while the political left is aghast at President Trump’s accusations of being spied on by Federal agencies, they aren’t talking about the fact that the Feds can both track your location by GPS, listen in on your cell phone, and watch you using your phone’s camera whenever they want to. Even when your phone appears to be off. A CNN article notes:
Government spies can set up their own miniature cell network tower. Your phone automatically connects to it. Now, that tower’s radio waves send a command to your phone’s antennae: the baseband chip. That tells your phone to fake any shutdown and stay on.
A smart hack won’t keep your phone running at 100%, though. Spies could keep your phone on standby and just use the microphone — or send pings announcing your location.
John Pirc, who did cybersecurity research at the CIA, said these methods — and others, like physically bugging devices — let the U.S. hijack and reawaken terrorists’ phones. (hat tip to here for the source)
In case you’re wondering, the NSA plug-in to activate your camera without your permission is called GUMFISH, and the NSA plug-in to activate your phone’s microphone (also without your permission) is CAPTIVATEDAUDIENCE. At least the second one is someone honest in it’s name.
So, what I am saying is that, if you want to ensure yourself of any privacy, you really can’t have a mobile phone. Tablet and tablet computers aren’t much, if any, better because the Feds have access to those, too.
I know this isn’t the most convenient news, but it is the truth. Being left alone by Big Brother is getting more and more difficult.
